Welcome to our weekly Friday Check-in for November 1st, 2024 ✅

If you are new to Soul Care, WELCOME!! We are so glad you are here. We have a weekly rhythm of checking in together on Fridays. We use Mindy Caliguire's Page, Person, Plan framework to create a weekly rhythm and prepare ourselves for Sabbath rest.

How’s your week been? It’s time to check in!

Take the next few minutes to slow down and enter into intentional silence, reflection, and prayer.

 Read  Luke 12:13-31:

“

The Parable of the Rich Fool

13 Someone in the crowd said to him, ‘Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me.’ 14 But he said to him, ‘Friend, who set me to be a judge or arbitrator over you?’ 15 And he said to them, ‘Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.’ 16 Then he told them a parable: ‘The land of a rich man produced abundantly. 17 And he thought to himself, “What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops?” 18 Then he said, “I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.” 20 But God said to him, “You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?” 21 So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich towards God.’

Do Not Worry

22 He said to his disciples, ‘Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. 24 Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! 25 And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life?[a] 26 If then you are not able to do so small a thing as that, why do you worry about the rest? 27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin;[b] yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. 28 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith! 29 And do not keep striving for what you are to eat and what you are to drink, and do not keep worrying. 30 For it is the nations of the world that strive after all these things, and your Father knows that you need them. 31 Instead, strive for his[c] kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

Spend a few seconds in silence before journaling in response to this passage:
  • Is there a word or phrase that stands out to you most? Hold that word/phrase in meditation for a moment.
  • Read the passage a second time, asking “To what area of my life does that particular word or phrase connect?”
  • And finally, read the text a third time, asking “Is there an invitation for me? Is there a response of some kind that God is inviting me into?” What do Jesus’ words mean for you today?
Person: An Invitation to Connection

In today’s passage, Jesus advises against greed and worry. Jesus reassures us that “the Father knows that you need” provision and protection. Reflection questions for today:

  • How does greed show up in your relationships?
  • How does worry and anxiety influence your relationships?
  • Do you worry you won’t have enough money, time, energy, etc? Is that worry based in the past, present, or future? How might this mentality of lack prevent you from giving to others generously or being present with other people?
Take time now to speak with Jesus about your worries, fears, and relationships; and confess any greed and/or striving. As you pray, open your hands with palms facing upward as a sign of surrender, letting go of what you might be clinging on to and in a posture of open-handed expectancy, ready for God’s good gifts of provision, protection, and care.

Plan: An Invitation to Intention
This month we’ve been meditating on the Lord’s Prayer and Psalm 77, and intentionally practicing good sleep hygiene. If you have woken in the night, what has become your “midnight oil”, prayers such as the Lord’s Prayer, Psalm 23, or Psalm 139?

As you’ve concluded your day with a blessing and practiced sleep hygiene tips, have you noticed any improvement in your sleep or sense of restfulness? Please feel free to share your experiences and reflections in the comments below!

Take a few remaining minutes to...

“Once again go over what God has done,
  lay out on the table the ancient wonders;
I’ll ponder all the things you’ve accomplished,
and give a long, loving look at your acts. (Ps 77:11-12)
Amen.

Thanks for checking in today!

Have a blessed Friday,
